Although they still have some way to go, Iran are coninuously on the rise during the past few years, including their first ever appearance in World League finals in 2014 (which ended in a fourth place after a loss to Italy in the bronze medal match) and their first ever Olympics at Rio 2016, where they ranked 5th.
Iran take part in the FIVB Men’s World Grand Champions Cup for the third time the history of the competition, after finishing fifth in 2009 and fourth in 2013.
Iran have featured in the past three FIVB Volleyball Men’s World Championships and were sixth at the 2014 edition in Poland, where a strong Russian side defeated them in the final round. They also defeated Japan to win the gold medal at the Asian Games in Incheon, Korea in 2014. Last month the qualified to the 2018 FIVB World Championship.
